Music and activism
Singer/Songwriter Peter Hicks is an ex-teacher who has worked as a musician
for several years now. Once a resident of QLD and with vivid memories of
the way things were under the Joh Bjelke-Petersen regime, he now lives in
Tasmania and has made his home there.
In 1996, Peter joined forces with Geoff Francis - backed by the CFMEU - to
produce the CD "Union is Strength: Songs for the Weipa Heroes". The venture
included a range of artists and paid tribute to the long-running and
inspirational struggle of coal miners in Far North QLD town of Weipa
against the anti-union activities of mine owner RTZ-CRA.
Over the years, Peter has sung on picket lines and at demonstrations in
support of worker's rights and other issues of environmental, racial and
social justice. During a recent visit to "the Mainland", he spoke about the
role of music and song within political struggle and played a number of
gigs, including a joint benefit for 3CR & Green Left Weekly in Melbourne.
Live recordings included on today's program were provided with the kind
assistance of 3CR's Lotti Stein, Michael Smith and Jodi Mohr.
