PART III -
ART, MUSIC & WORKING LIFE

This week we take a look at the world of independent and alternative
film-makers and their art of recording the struggles & the stories of
community working life & activism through the medium of film and video.

TRISH NACEY, BRISBANE

April 7, 1998 is a date few unionists & community activists will forget. On
that night, & in the weeks following [on our TVs & in the papers] we saw
Patricks workers forceably removed from their workplaces by security guards
& dogs and the beginning of a lengthy dispute on Australian docks which
involved massive community support and resistance.

Brisbane independent filmmaker, TRISH NACEY, was so moved by the event she
made a film of the dispute. Entitled "Solidarity & Unity", the documentary
attempted to show the "human face" of the dispute & the massive community
support for the MUA workers which eventuated. Trish talks about what
motivates her to record life on the screen [bog or little] & some of the
issues facing independent film-makers in getting their work made & out
there to be seen.

WILD SPACES - HOBART

This weekend [January 14-15], a film festival showcasing the works of
alternative & independent activist film-makers will be showing at the
Tasmanian School of Art in Hobart. Traditionally based in the environment
movement, the Wild Spaces Film Festivals [this is now the 4th in Hobart &
about the 8th Australia-wide] showcase the work of film-makers dealing
with issues of social and global justice as well as environmental activism.
A highlight of the Festival is an hour-long documentary compiled of footage
of the World Trade Organisation talks protests held in Seattle in November.

Festival Coordinator, SIMON BROWN, talks about the importance of such
events as a space for independent & alternative film-makers to get seen and
as an important part of celebrating our history and our life as an active
community.
