Unions & workers' movements in Malaysia
On this week's program, we take a look at the rising workers' movement in
Malaysia and at the changing role of unions post the Asian economic
collapse which hit countries like Malaysia particularly hard. After a
decade & a half of relative economic prosperity and growth, unions have
become weakened, representing only 10% of workers. Repressive laws, such as
the Internal Security Act have been strengthened and have been used against
trade union leaders. Malaysia has not seen the same degree of militant
activity on the part of unions which has characterised the struggle in
neighbouring South Korea. Yet, since the economic collapse of the last 2
years, Malaysian workers are increasingly becoming conscious of the need
for democratic reform and movements for social change.
Tian Chua is the Director of the Labour Resource Centre in Kuala Lumpur.
He's speaking with Gigi Chandrashekeran. The interview was made available
