Robert,
Since all Family History Centers (FHC) are staffed by either volunteers or
church members who have been assigned to the work, the responses you would
receive if you visited other FHCs would differ from one to the other.
In addition, the director and other staff members are of various levels of
computer literacy. Along with Legacy, FHCs have the *option* of installing
other software at no charge, including Roots Magic and Ancestral Quest. The
problem is that it is very difficult to get the workers well trained in ONE
program, let alone 3-4. Since most LDS members use PAF, it is reasonable
that the staff be trained in that program, which while not having a lot of
bells and whistles, still does the basics quite well. It is not reasonable
for visitors to the FHC to expect the staff to be able to help with any of
the optional programs, and in fact it is likely that many FHCs will not have
one or more of them even installed. If Legacy is installed, it may not be at
the current version or build.
Given all the possible problems, the best option is to bring a laptop with
Legacy installed on it.
In regards to Sharon's comments about new FamilySearch, the Church has not
recommended using Legacy yet, because Legacy does not yet have the
capability of interfacing with nFS. My understanding is that it is in
development and will be released in an update sometime after the full nFS
rollout is completed. Many of us are chomping at the bit for that
functionality to be available in Legacy.
