Hi All,

Thanks to everyone for their input on my earlier question. Since then I have
found out a few new things by experimentation that I want to share. Plus, a
new question has come up.

The question: does anyone know how to access or search on the _UID field?
Every person and marriage is marked with such a field in a GEDCOM file
generated by Legacy, at least one that was prepared for GEDCOM 5.5 or for
Legacy use.

That field is a Unique Identifier that I think is supposed to be universally
unique across the whole universe of genealogy trees. Ancestry.com seems to
preserve that field and puts it back out with a GEDCOM created from one of
its trees. If the tree originally came from Legacy, it appears the UID's
will still match when the GEDCOM from Ancestry.com is re-imported to Legacy.
If I could get access to them, they are a way to match records between two
files.

I have discovered a couple of other things about GEDCOM files coming from
Ancestry.com:
-The RIN's get changed for some reason, so they are no good for matching
records.
-The source and other field identifiers also seem to be changed.

If you take an Ancestry.com GEDCOM, import it into Legacy as a new file,
then immediately re-export it as a new GEDCOM from Legacy, you can compare
the new file to an original Legacy GEDCOM file. I used MSWord's tool to
compare and merge two files to find and highlight changes between the two
GEDCOM files. It does a good job of making them standout and I can gather a
list of the UID's of the records that changed. (The RIN's, as mentioned
above, are unfortunately changed and are useless to find anything in the
original Legacy file.) If I can figure out how to use the UID in Legacy, I
may be able to focus on the records that changed, and nothing else.
