You actually don't have to make any changes to the Ancestry.com GEDCOM file
itself. When you tell Legacy to Import-GEDCOM, it will tell you that some of
the information is unrecognized. Legacy will ask if you want to see details on
the mystery information; say 'yes'. A dialog box will pop-up showing the tags
that were unrecognized in the Ancestry.com file. So far, the only ones that
have shown up for me are "UID" and "APID". You will need to select the UID
entry and press the button that says "Remap...". Another box will pop up with a
list of tags Legacy understands; scroll down and pick the entry "_UID"and click
OK. That will tell Legacy to treat the information it finds marked as UID the
way Legacy normally does for _UID. You can then proceed with the import. But
please note, do NOT assign an autosource to the import records, or every record
in the file will look like it's changed to Legacy.

I do not know what Ancestry.com uses the APID tag for, so I skip mapping that
tag. If anyone knows, it might be interesting info.

As far as the sequence of records in the Ancestry.com GEDCOM file, I do not
know. It's the same in the small files I've compared so far, but that may not
be generally true. Since there's no need to monkey with the GEDCOM file itself,
does it really matter? Once you do the import, Intellishare takes care of the
record matching for you.

Hope that helps.

Robert

I have to do what you did - thanks for pioneering and providing a map of
admirable clarity - plus several similar tasks. How does Ancestry label the UID
in a gedcom, and how did you re-map? Also, is the positioning in the ancestry
gedcom identical or equivalent, so a simple global replace of Ancestry's tag
with _UID a text editor like GEDIT would work?

Related, using Intellishare Merge, can't one fix the UID, import into a file
copy, and just flag the wanted data as each match is presented - editing as
desired as you go? (Most of my Intellishare Merges are updates or deletions,
jjust selection of whether right or left field survives, but some require
combination of data from both, easy to do at that point using cut-and-paste or
even a complete rewrite of the intended survivor field, and much helped by the
provision of all individual views and family structure on the far right.)

5) Import the new GEDCOM file to a Legacy database, making sure to re-map
the field Ancestry.com calls UID to the field Legacy calls _UID. Legacy will
remind you to do this, because it does not recognize Ancestry.com's name for
the field.
