The UID field is not universally unique within the world of genealogy
trees as you think. In Legacy the UID is called the Intellishare number.
you can use it when merging people who are imported into your data.
People with the same UID/Intellishare number who have identical
information can be automatically merged. There is a help file topic on
using Intellishare to share research tasks that explains how to use
intellishare for this.
