Sandy, I believe the correct way to do this would be to hit the little plus sign at the extreme right hand edge of the line where you are trying to enter the data.
This then allows you to enter the address in any format you like and add notes. This is useful for recording things like street addresses and names of farms ie Freds Farm, Bludgers Road, Tadworth, Leicestershire, 553 EX2 If you are not concerned about the mapping and associated database functionality then what I have suggested above should work for you. However other parts of the Legacy software may not be able to "see" and interpret that address correctly. The mapping software and database reports seem to rely upon the previously discussed 4 field data format.
