Paul,

I also have a 22" monitor, but I have had it for ages, well before Legacy 7.4.
and this problem. If I uncheck "stretch fonts when resizing", the pop-up boxes
are readable, but the font size on the screen is too small for me to read
comfortably.

Yes - a minor issue, but still irritating.

Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Pop up boxes squished

Hi all,

I believe this is monitor size and resolution dependent. I have a laptop (15.6
" 1280X800) and using this screen, I have no issues. When I connect my laptop
to a large external monitor (22" 1680X1050) I have the squished pop-up boxes.
The only thing that is changing is the monitor, my legacy settings and windows
settings are identical.

I have Options-Customize-Fonts set to default values, and "Stretch Fonts when
resizing" is checked (I do resize fonts). My Windows settings for DPI size is
100% (96DPI).

I believe the issue has to do with how and when Legacy 'stretches fonts', On
the large monitor, depending upon which tab I set Legacy to start in (Family,
Pedigree, Descendant, or Index) I get slightly different 'stretching'.

If I start in the index tab, the fonts are about twice the size that they are
if I did not have 'stretching selected' I believe this is because the fonts are
being stretched to 'fill' one line on the screen grid. If I then switch to the
family tab, the fonts stay the same size and are quite small in relation to the
size of the data boxes in the family view. With these smaller fonts, the pop-up
boxes display just fine. If I then minimize/maximise the family view, the fonts
become very large, because in family view since there are only a fixed number
of boxes on the screen, and the monitor is large, so each box is quite large.
(in this case, the pop-up boxes are fine since there is an intervening
minimize/maximize).

If I start in family view (my normal setting), the fonts are very large to
start with because the text boxes are large to start with. The pop-boxes are
squished.

So, the bottom line is that the screen fonts can be of varying sizes on the
same screen depending upon how one got to that screen. It would appear that if
one starts in family view (and probably many users do), the screen fonts can be
quite large on a large monitor. However, whatever logic is used to calculate
the pop-up box size seems to be 'unaware' of the size of the font on screen.
But, this will only be an issue if the screen fonts are large enough that they
do not fit in whatever the minimum (or default) pop-up box size.

However, in the end I think it's a pretty minor issue. I don't find a quick
minimize/maximize in family view once per session that big a deal.

Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Pop up boxes squished

Wm,

The font size Legacy uses is based on the height of the window not on the width
of the screen. If you make any screen in Legacy too narrow for all the text on
a line to show then the line will be truncated at the end of the screen. It is
very difficult to calculate a font size based on the width of the screen
because each line will contain a different number of characters and, with
variable width fonts, the width of the letters is not a constant value. The pop
up box for the parent section uses the width of the parent box. For children
the pop up can use more width because the area for the children list is larger.

My interpretation of the "squished" in this subject is that some people are
seeing either a situation where the lines in the pop up boxes are not fully
visible because the top or the bottom of the fonts are not displayed or where
there is an overlap between lines because the space between the lines in the
pop up is insufficient. I have not been able to duplicate that problem. Every
time I change the height of my Legacy family view to change the font size in
the family view then try to open the pop up boxes the font size in the pop up
box matches the font size in the family view. I did see some cases where the
space between lines was much larger than the standard but in no cases were the
lines overlapped nor were there cases where the font height was too large for
the lines.
