I rarely use Alternate Names, unless I have a person who was, say, born John Walton and later became Herschel Smith.
Instead, I enter the given name as, for example, Emeline "Emily" if I want to note what she was usually called, and I transcribe documents which give other oddball spellings of the given or surname in the Events section. My motto is simplify, simplify. I see no need to make data entry more complicated by using a Legacy feature just because it is there. But YMMV, of course (your mileage may vary).
