Subject: [LegacyUG] Entering Locations/Places

Hello:

I am a new user of Legacy 7. I understand the importance of entering
locations consistently; however, the instructions are for town, county,
state, country. The majority of my ancestors are from England and a few
from Canada. How do I enter these locations, i.e., Lincoln, Lincolnshire,
England? If so, isn't there a field missing as Lincolnshire is the county,
but there isn't a state or province. Also, what would be the correct entry
for Canadian locations; can anyone give me an example?

Thanks for any help/suggestions.

Christine

Christine,

I am from the UK, and the advice given so far is absolutely wrong. The 4
field convention to which you refer is designed by Americans for Americans
and simply does not work for the UK, and my understanding is that it has
limited use in Canada. Your location, as written, for Lincoln is spot on.
My recommendation is to write the location as you know it to be. In fact
like many others I also include the house name/number and the street for the
residence, and this works perfectly well. In my view this also improves the
presentation in reports when compared with using the Address function, which
I only use for details of living people with whom I may wish to get in
touch. See my blog at http://bit.ly/8VDqTc - this also makes reference to a
couple of other sites you may find of use. If you receive advice to use "UK"
or "GB" at the end of the location, ignore it, as you know we don't use
them, and indeed it is also wrong to include either.

An important trick is to sort the locations from right to left, so when
looking down the list it is easy to find any location. This is achieved by
going to View>Master Lists>Location, click the Sort button next to the Globe
Icon and set to read from right to left. Also check the box next to the Sort
button. Using this system the Mapping function works well and will even
locate the actual street in a town, provided, of course, you did include it
in the location.

Are there any problems caused by setting Legacy up in this way? Only one,
and that is the Geo-locator may not work properly. I rarely use this, but
when I do, should I hit a problem, I add "UK" at the end of the Long Name,
find the information I require and then delete the "UK".

It is worth noting that since Family Search opened up their indexing for the
Family Search Beta our locations are now being entered correctly on their
site.
