I forgot about Godfrey Memorial Library. I used to belong to them several
years ago, but when they lost access to a lot of databases due to ProQuest
raising their rates they had to be dropped. What they were left with after
that was very little and not worth the subscription so I dropped it.

It sounds like it might be worth checking out again. They used to have a
database that was excellent at tracking people (living or dead) from one
location to many others. Then unfortunately it was pulled and only accessible
by law enforcement. I was able to track a lot of people and figure out how
they were related or if they were related. They have something else available
now (free through libraries), but it isn't quite as good as the other one.

Another thing to check out is what your local library has that is accessible
from home. Many of them have newspapers as well and even some obscure ones
that are very old.

On the WVR site, I've never been able to find a listing of what they have. It
must be well hidden.

Yvonne,

I have searched for hours on WVR and have not been limited in any way on
newspapers or other records. The newspapers at WVR are from
Newspaper.Archives that you mention. I also forgot to mention that WVR also
has family histories from the Godfrey Memorial Library Collection (this is a
subscription site!). It took me quite awhile to discover all of the records
on this site. The $59.XX is well worth it for my needs.

Again, it depends upon what your are looking for and where.

Yes, I did subscribe about a month ago. I found that 99.5% of the
records that were useful to me were the newspapers.

However, what was not told to subscribers is you could only look for 10
surnames--you learn about this restriction after you've been in the site
for a little while. At some point, you are asked to identify 10
surnames and are locked into those 10. (They didn't explain why you had
to pick 10 surnames so I locked myself into surnames that weren't that
important to me.) Once the surname lock happens you can't search the
newspapers for differing surnames for about the next 60 days. And, to
have full access to anyone at any time in the newspaper archives you
have to pay an extra fee.

The good news--the WorldVitalRecords people were very helpful and, they
lived up to their promise of money back if you were not satisfied.

I ended up canceling my WVR subscription and subscribed to Newspaper
Archives for about $73 for two years. I'm very pleased with this
subscription as you cannot imagine how many obituary, wedding and other
various pieces of information I've located. You are able to copy the
newspaper articles and their source information into your database or
save or print them. Some of the newspapers available are quite
old...into the early 1900's and perhaps even earlier than that in some
cases. Of course, there are many newspapers that have not yet been
scanned but they keep adding to the database.

Me, I'm very pleased with Newspaper Archives and would rate it quite
high as it gives us a glimpse of ancestor/family activities, interests
and events. I've found a number of "cousins" in these articles as,
often, the writer includes the names of everyone who attend. So, in
summary, I can't readily compare Newspaper Archives directly to Ancestry
which I also like.
