Let’s say on a census record a woman states she is the mother of 8 children
with 6 children living. I add two “unknown” children but I just fill in the
surname only. I put the birth/death dates between the date of the census and
the last known date that I have (usually their marriage date) and then I put
the gender unknown. I then write a note explaining it. That way I can see
that she really had 6 children, 2 child died before the census was taken, I
don’t know if they were boys or girls. Another good example is when you are
looking at tombstones and you see

infant of Mr. and Mrs. William Colon Simmons

I would put a child in with an unknown gender with only the surname.

I am sorry I didn't explain this very well. I don't put ? in data fields. I
just use unknown sex (?) with DATA as the surname to indicate that this is not
data about a person that is part of my family tree but it is an entry in Legacy
which I use like a filing system where I store the information that I collect
that may well be relevant to my tree in the future.

There are some really good reasons why you should leave data fields
blank when you don't have any information to enter..

1. Search icon has a "Missing Information" search tab. If you have a
question mark in the field, Legacy doesn't understand it and it thinks
that you do have information.

2. Book reports can insert underlines for missing information only if
the field is blank.

3. Chronology view can insert an underline for missing location so you
can quickly tell that you need to find one!

4. Getting It Right by Mary Slawson indicates that when you don't have
data, the fields should be left blank.

Thank you Sherry.

I would really like to have that option. I use the ? slot for my data that I
can't yet relate to a particular person or for things like ships

This way it does not interfere with my index because it is all together
e.g.

DATA Family name -Country abbreviation- State abbreviation

DATA Town- State or County Country (for towns where I have many families)

DATA Ships Name of Ship

I find italics particularly hard to skim down and it doesn't achieve much
purpose if you have color to highlight those individuals where the sex is
unknown.
