Sherry, My impression is Anne is not talking about unlinked individuals or people. She's talking about unlinked miscellaneous information that she's arbitrarily giving the "surname" DATA, if I understood her correctly.
Personally, I would not do this, but it is an interesting idea. I use the To-Do feature for similar purposes; lots and lots of room there in Description and Results fields with myriad ways to pull the info out in reports.
