This discussion could be endless because it is not likely that most people will change their minds on this issue.
I value the historical accuracy just as much as the rest of you, but that accuracy can be handled by the adjacent NOTE fields. With this method, you can pull up every instance of all persons living at the exact same location on the map, whether they were born 1,000 years ago or yesterday. In so doing, you maintain alphabetical integrity with your master location list. It is not necessary to have multiple location names in your master index for the exact same spot on the map. With over 13,000 persons on our database and expected to grow exponentially, if we were to use Canada, Upper Canada, Lower Canada, Canada West, British North America, Massachusetts Bay Colony and the whole host of other multiples, we would end up with considerably more locations than would be valuable to us and much harder to muddle through. Of course, you can use the different historical names in the location fields themselves if you insist, but the NOTES fields work just fine for this purpose and they come across just fine when you transfer gedcoms across programs. It's up to each person how he/she desires to handle this and is often stated, Legacy will let you do it either way.
