For Tami & Michelle:

If you are doing a One-Name Study as I am, I have one ‘family tree’ where I
enter all instances of the surname or variant and cite the source so that when
I get queries I can point that person in the right direction. I keep my own
family tree and only those that I have a positive link to in it. If I happen
to find a connection in my One-Name Study tree, I transfer what is relevant
through a Gedcom. That way if you do come across other instances that don’t
link now, keeping them this way, you might be able to connect them at some
point.

For David:

DNA testing is an absolute science – it’s how you interpret the results that
gets you your connections. Even if you don’t get a link, a person within a 3rd
to 5th cousin range could be linked, but you have to have patience. I had my
Dad tested for YDNA and Family Finder (he has now passed on but they still
retain his samples) and I have tested for the Full mtDNA Sequence. Recently,
reviewing my Dad’s results through his mtDNA, I found a person with a variant
surname to his that was within the 3rd to 5th cousin range. We are currently
searching documents for the possible connection. It’s a challenge but in
research whether genealogy or DNA, it’s the chase that is so fulfilling!!

links?

NO, This is where DNA really pays off. There are several very large researched
surname groups out there that I would like to find a proven connection. BUT,
with having done DNA testing, I have found that there is no way I will be
connected to some of these groups. So it is a waste of my time to continue in
researching in those directions.

Why would anyone want to carry around all of these nonrelated entries within
their database?

If there is a chance of connection, I make a separate database not an island
within my main one, and do some tracking from these external families. I have
found very few ever get connected, so all I have to do is delete the file, to
be rid if the non connecting people.

Thanks,

Oh, one more thing…

The less common the surname, the more likely I will add them since there is a
higher chance they are connected.

I’ve been working on my database for awhile now and have a question. How do you
all decide to add to your databases? Do you add anyone with the surname your
are searching or only those people with a confirmed link? Until now I’ve only
been adding only those that I can confirm a link. However, lately I’m wondering
if I’m overlooking a lot of potential links because they may be several
generations previous to the one I’m currently searching. Just wondering how you
all feel about this too. Thanks!
