As a general rule I only add people who are connected to me and *some*
of the people connected to them (see below) but I do also add unlinked
(ie not linked to any other individual in Legacy) people if I am fairly
sure that they are going to fit into the family somewhere. That way I
don't forget about them and what information I have is stored with them
until such time as I can either link them to the family or eliminate them.

For example, I have several records and a cousin has some artefacts
(medals etc) relating to a William Thomas Bloor. In a funeral notice he
is referred to as my 2xGreat Grandfather's nephew. My mother heard her
mother talk of "Uncle Tom." So we know he is a member of the family but
after several years' research I still don't know where he fits, but he
is in my database, along with his wife, waiting to be linked up.

When I first began, I would record all blood relatives and their
spouses, the parents & siblings of the spouses and the spouses of the
siblings. Then I decided this was too much and I wanted to keep my
database smaller so I would recognize all the people in it, so I decided
only enter the siblings of my uncles' & aunts' spouses, along with their
parents, and only the parents of my cousins' spouses. As time has gone
by I am finding more and more (and more distant) cousins and beginning
not to bother even adding in their spouses' parents.

I do often hear about people who claim to have tens of thousands of
people in their trees and wonder how they can find the time to research
fully all those people and get to know them, as I like to do as far as
possible.
