Cheryl:
Is your database a pedigree or a descendancy one? Mine is a descendancy
and I use the Register System devised by the New England Historic Genealogical
Register as the User ID number. I would like the idea of a generation number;
the lack of one results in the generational User ID numbers being taped to the
sides of my monitor so that I can find them quickly in a book that I have
compiled,

Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Numbering systems?
I curate the database(s) for three fairly large families
beginning in the US in the early 1700s. That's 14 or 15
generations. The numbering can get ugly.
You might want to GOOGLE Richard Pence + numbering It's a
fun read, if nothing else.
Bottom line is, though, most numbering systems are static
not dynamic.
For one project I use a generation number, a G, and a
sequential number. It isn't perfect but then again it works
for me.
