Because I am researching all the 4 lines of my grandparents, the
majority of people in my file are Ps, Bs, Ds or Cs. (Fortunately, my
grandparents had surnames beginning with 4 different letters!) For the
descendants, who are a mix of P & B, a mix of D & C or a mix of all 4 I
use 3 different letters. (X, Y & Z as it happens.

So, my UserIDs mainly being with a letter P, B, D or C. This is
followed by the generation number. I now number my grandparent's
generation as 1, my great grandparents' generation as 2, my 2x great
grandparents' generation as 3 and son. For my parents' generation I use
1m (where the m stands for minus), for my generation 2m, for my
children's generation 3m and so on.

The UserID comprises the initial letter, the generation number, a full
stop and then the RIN, Eg P1.1234 or C5.789 or D3m.6077.

I choose to display the UserID after an individual's name, so when I am
looking at Family View I can see the generation number of the parents
and when I open the next screen to add a child or a parent I see the RIN
(after the words Individual's Information) at the top of the screen so I
know exactly what to enter in the UserID field.

I use the UserID to tag all the names in my paper files, which are kept
in binders according to the type of document - Certificates, Newspaper
clippings, Letters, etc.
