I just let Legacy handle the RINs. I put the "sorted birth date" in the User ID field. LTools makes adding the sorted birthdate extremely easy. Since my paper (and now digital) filing system doesn't depend on the MRIN, I don't even worry about that. I once thought about using some meaningful numbering system but quickly changed my mind once I found genealogy software. The biggest problem was that I couldn't decide what was "meaningful". Then I found my first genealogy software - not Legacy - and decided to hold off coming up with a numbering system. It's been about 15 years and I've not, yet, been sorry.

What numbering system do most people use (RIN, User ID, AFN, Ahnentafel, more?). Do people use more than one (i.e. RIN and AFN)? I like the way Ahnentafel doubles each generation (me #1, dad #2, mom #3 (2+1), grampa #4, grandma #5 (4+1)), but I think to use this system in Legacy, I would have to (at the very beginning) set up generations (and generations) of "unknown" ancestors to ensure when I finally learned about that particular ancestor that they had the right Ahnentafel number. When I first started out I was sloppy and didn't really see this project for what it was. So I'm creating a new file just focusing on my ancestors. Once I get them cleaned up, I'll start spreading out sideways. So, if Ahnentafel is the way to go, I could make the effort now to ensure that all my ancestors were numbered appropriately. Hope my rambling make sense. Thanks for your help!
