Thanks, David.  That's what I decided too!!  I did start with a new Legacy
file - a copy of my master file - renamed it and then tried to add the
gedcom.  This doubled the number of people in the file to some 11,000 odd
so for some reason Legacy doesn't think identical people are the same at
all.  The Ancestry file was originally a gedcom uploaded from my master
Legacy file (using the 7.5 version).

I find that Ancestry is so very good at finding sources and obscure
baptisms etc. that it is easy to update my online file but it is tedious to
duplicate the work on my home file.   I was trying to merge the two but
this doesn't seem to be an easy answer either.
