That’s what I thought, but somebody else on this list said you don’t have to be a subscriber to see public trees. I was just trying to find out, but I’m a subscriber and would have access to other public trees so I can’t test this theory. This person said they called Ancestry and they were told anybody could see public trees.
Ancestry does allow subscribers to some of their other genealogy websites to view public trees posted on Ancestry so this could have something to do with it. Recently when I was a non-subscriber I tried to access a public tree and I received a message that I had to subscribe. I do know people who I have invited who are not subscribers were able to access my tree whether public or private. I don’t know if it’s still valid since Ancestry keeps changing the rules. Your mention of invitees reminds me of a situation a distant cousin had. She allowed someone to have access to her private tree not knowing this guest invitee was stealing her information and photos then reposting them to a public tree under her own name. This distant cousin had given me the exact same photos and information which I never shared with anybody else or online so I couldn’t figure out why it was reposted under another person’s name. That’s something to think about when somebody asks for an invite to your tree. If you don’t make your information public then somebody else might do it for you.
