Definitely helps clarify! Thank you.

Just to clarify - others have "said it without really saying it":
Legacy 6 files - used by Legacy 6 program
Install Legacy 8 (or Legacy 9...no release date yet, but sounds like it might be "soon"??)
Have Legacy 8 open the Legacy 6 files.
Legacy 8 converts the Legacy 6 files INTO NEW FILES for Legacy 8. It does NOT modify the Legacy 6 files, it just reads the Legacy 6 files and creates brand new files for Legacy 8.

So, when you are done:
*Legacy 6 files - used by Legacy 6 program - the Legacy 8 conversion routine made no changes to these files *Legacy 8 files - used by Legacy 8 program. These files can NOT be used by Legacy 6 program

At this point you have TWO TOTALLY INDEPENDENT SETUPS - one for Legacy 6, one for Legacy 8.

So, if you make changes in a Legacy 6 file after you've installed and set up Legacy 8 files, your Legacy 6 changes will NOT show up in the Legacy 8 files/program Ditto - if you make a change using Legacy 8 on the Legacy 8 files, your changes will NOT show up in the Legacy 6 files/program.

What most(?) people do:
* Install Legacy 8
* Convert Legacy 6 files to Legacy 8 (you may want to give the Legacy 8 file an obvious name like "test8" or "play8" or something like that. (I don't remember if it lets you change the file name during conversion, but you can always do a FILE, SAVE AS to create the temp/test/play filename.) * PLAY in Legacy 8 until you are comfortable with it. BUT make any "permanent" changes using Legacy 6 * Once you are comfortable with Legacy 8, ONCE AGAIN have Legacy 8 read the Legacy 6 files to make NEW Legacy 8 files (thus your Legacy 8 files now reflect any changes you made in Legacy 6 during your Legacy 8 "play" period). During this conversion process, give your Legacy 8 files a "valid" name. * After that, USE ONLY LEGACY 8 for your "permanent" changes (and be sure you use the newer version of the Legacy 8 files, not your "play" version). You can leave Legacy 6 dormant on your drive, or get rid of it, your choice - just make sure you "let it sit" (that is, use Legacy 6 only to look up stuff, don't use Legacy 6 to do any updates). For me, I left the old version installed and available for a while...that way if I saw something "funny" in my Legacy 8 data, I could go back to see how it was in Legacy 6 (and, 99% of the time, it was "funny" in Legacy 6 also and I just hadn't noticed it!!! lol ).

In all reality, for the basic functions Legacy 8 works a lot like Legacy 6 (and other versions). Legacy 8 has more "bells/whistles" (features), but the overall operation is very similar. I don't think you'll have any problems making the switch.

Thank you. So, since Legacy 8 will not overwrite Legacy 6, once I can figure out where Legacy 8 stores its data, I could run both until I figure out the new one. Is this correct?

Brian, then if I kept both, would they access the data from the same data file, or does Legacy 8 put its data in a different location, and does it save it "on the fly" like Legacy 6? My Legacy 6 data is all in a folder named Legacy that resides directly on the C hard drive. I don't have a real reason for wanting NOT to use Legacy 6, except that I fear it would not work well
with Windows 10. Am I right on that?

Legacy 6 should work with Windows 10.

Legacy 8 keeps its data and program files in different places from Legacy 6,
but you can set it up to staore your data anywhere you want.

If it worries you, just put Legacy 6 on your new computer and copy your
datafiles there.
