George,

It sounds as if you don't have Legacy set up properly and you may keep opening a different file.

Check your settings at Options - Customise 1.2 that controls which file Legacy opens when you open Legacy. Also check your settings at Options - Customise 6.1 and 6.2 which are your default locations for data and media.

Check the Recent File list to see if you are actually opening different files The Recent File List is found by clicking the L top left corner of the Legacy screen if the L is larger than the title bar. If it isn't, you'll see a System Ribbon tab and it's on that instead. It depends on the Design Style you are using.

Make sure you understand that the backup on exit of your Legacy file is a backup file. Keep them safe off your computer. They are only used when needed. The data backup is used by opening Legacy and going to File > Restore File. Backup is not the way the file is saved. Your family file is saved every time you click a Save button.

Re the error. You don't say which error you are getting. But the first response is to use File > File Maintenance - Check/Repair. This should be done regularly to keep your database healthy. It may take quite a while especially if you've never run it. See http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/AA-00749  for help on using Check/Repair.

Your media won't keep getting disconnected if
a) you are using the same file all the time in Legacy and
b) if you don't move the media on your computer.

If you are really loosing other data between sessions, it's an indication you are actually using more than one file in Legacy. The other reasons people think they've lost data is that they are looking at a screen with the wrong tab open (eg the Notes screen) or with a filter on (eg the Assigned Sources screen or To-Dos).

If you haven't read some of the Legacy Blog posts read these:
https://news.legacyfamilytree.com/legacy_news/2018/05/compilation-of-legacy-101articles.html
and the series referenced in this one:
https://news.legacyfamilytree.com/legacy_news/2019/09/tuesdays-tip-options-message-boxes-beginner.html

And keep up with the current series.
This weeks Tuesday's Tip is on the File Ribbon Tab/Toolbar
https://news.legacyfamilytree.com/legacy_news/2019/09/tuesdays-tip-file-toolbar-beginner.html

You'll soon be as familiar and comfortable with Legacy as your were with PAF.

I think you need to do this.

On the file that you were modifying you need to locate all of the modified individuals and export those to a new database, and then merge that file back into your original file.

You can find the modified records by using the search to look for everyone with an update date after you started working on the wrong file. Then put a tag on those entries and use the export against those by using that tag.

Merging those, and only those, will mean that they will be the only ones to merge.

Hi,
For whatever reason I can no longer recall, I began a "new" family file using  my older family file, meaning it was the same file but different name. I obviously then forgot to move to my main family file to continue doing my usual inputting of information and where I do all my work. Unknowingly, I kept working on this "new" file for 11 days before I switched back to the family file I always work with, and the only file I want. I want to move only the portion that is new from the new file to the more established file, where I should have been inputting information in the first place. I tried many things, such as importing the entire "new" file into the established file but with over 30,000 individuals in my tree, that produced 900,000 duplications to review based on the criteria I chose. I tried the help index, read up on tagging and hashtags, to no avail. Is there a way to do this?
Thanks for any help,
Gloria
