I am confused.

Do you already have a person in you database twice? Once as the child of X & Y
(call this person A), and once as the spouse of Z (call this person B)? If so,
what you want to do is "merge" A & B. You don't want to "link" them.

If you have X & Y's child (A) already in your database and you later discover
that A married Z, you should "link" A to Z via the "Add Spouse|Link to
existing..." option.

If you have Z's spouse (B) already in your database and you later discover
that B is X & Y's child, then you should "link" B to X & Y via the "Add
Parents|Link to existing..." option.

I'm not sure I made myself very clear. Maybe someone else could take a stab at
an explanation.
