Geoff, this expand/contract feature is nice in theory, but if I remember
correctly, there are some glitches (in my opinion) as follows (copying from
one of my old notes to the list):
1) Adding or stripping the "USA" is an all-or-nothing thing. You cannot
strip the USA label from just the short location. It is removed from both
long and short names together. Then your whole list sorting is messed up.
2) The expand/contract feature only works on locations which are formatted
with the standard comma placeholders. Therefore it doesn't change my short
names unless I first edit them to add these place holders. This defeats the
whole purpose of changing my short name, which is so they read nicely in
reports. I have a lot of rural ancestors who did not live in a particular
town within a county. The contraction feature takes a location like " ,
Coffee County, Alabama, USA" and turns it into " , Coffee County, AL, USA."
In a report, I'd like to see that someone was from Coffee County, Alabama -
not from , Coffee County, AL, USA.
3) I also wish there were a way to strip the word "County" from *only* the
Short Locations and *only* temporarily so I could print a chart without that
extra word.
Basically, this expand/contract feature really doesn't help me at all and is
confusing to use.
I just caution anyone to test this feature on a sample or test database
before clicking one of the options.

Barbara,
Why don't you try this really easy method?
1) Click on View > Master Lists > Location > Option button > Expand/Contract
2) Click on Expand Long Location Names. Click Continue.
This should unabbreviate the states for you.
Thanks,

I have looked though the archives and help section and cannot find the
solution to my problem. I am sorry to bring this topic up again. I have
decided to replace abbreviated names for states with the full names. I
have used this many times and it worked fine. I am in Lists -Location. I
have "replace only found text" checked. In the How to Find I have "Find
whole word" checked and "Exact" checked. I have tried
checking/unchecking different variations and it does not work. It will
go though the searching process and then says "no replacements made".
There are no spaces and I am typing the abbreviations exactly as I have
entered it. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks, Barbara
