I believe the person you're addressing is no longer "here", and I can't
speak for him/her, but at the time I had the same confusion and think I
successfully figured out what they were trying to say, so I'll give it a go.

Yes, "close nodes" = collapsing the outline.

I believe this is so the "before" and "after" snapshots of the .leo file
don't get muddled with the state-tracking data.

"Commit nodes" or "portions" refers to the generated @ <files> - only
commit in your VCS those you are sharing, not the ones you consider
"private".

Safety is a relative thing - this person claimed to not have a problem with
doing it - I've seen other say it can be done, but with difficulty. In my
limited experience I wasn't able to do so successfully, which is why I
added to my "SOP" making sure all the important data in my .leo files are
also output to more-or-less structured plaintext @shadow files, all of
which is frequently committed to VCS as well as routine backup archives.

Note I am not casting aspersions on Leo's data safety, just working around
my dangerously limited understanding of how to use it properly - perhaps
now improved, but I'm a belt+suspenders kinda guy.
