There is another possibility, having professors recommend to their programming students that they use Leo. This is another form of marketing. My guess is that this (and other forms of word-of-mouth) are the dominant form of marketing for Emacs and vim. In the past, some professors *have* recommended Leo. Don't know if any still do.
