Yes.... I know what '\' does. What I am saying is that if one cuts and
pastes it out of the book the resulting out put doesn't look like this:

   <command>             \
   <more commands>   \
   <less commands>    \
   <final command>

but looks like this:

   <command>
   <more commands>
   <less commands>
   <final command>
   \
   \
   \

The && I was talking about in the book looks like:


   <command> &&
   <more commands>

but after it is paste in looks like:


  <command>
  &&
  <next command>
