Libertarians have existed for thousands of years. The LP does not define libertarianism. Whether or not libertarians were in the major parties before there was a Libertarian Party is irrelevant. There IS a libertarian now, and no libertarian on earth would join the Republican or Democratic parties right now. There is not a single libertarian in the GOP, and that includes Ron Paul because he's working against the cause of liberty despite his intentions. He's trying to get the train to reverse directions by facing the back of the train and shoveling in coal, but all he's doing is speeding up the train in the opposite direction of liberty.
