It was more a rhetorical question :-)
Point is that all area fill options are direct formatting (like when you press
"bold" on the standard toolbar) and not styles (such as the character style
"emphasis"). That's perfectly clear for solid colors, which could be helpful to
understand why gradients work likewise.
