I'm guessing that's not too likely, as it went down after a lengthy period 
of use on a day (not the 26th) when I didn't have e-mail/internet access. I 
don't think the machine has ever been exposed to a floppy disk other than 
four I bought with the machine, and I'm very vigilant with e-mail (I never 
open attachments) etc.

What does fdisk /mbr do? Rebuild the FAT table by scanning the data on the 
disk?

Checking it out now - thanks again!

BTW another 'thought' is that the problem (disk write error) was caused by 
the climate here -hot and humid - producing condensation - don't know if 
that's possible (I know hard drives have an airtight seal - do they have a 
partial vacuum too?)
