Steve --

sorry to hear about your libretto woes. i am not a harddrive guru but have
resurrected a few lost drives, so i'll contribute my 2 cents worth.

in my experience:

c:> FDISK /MBR
is usually a safe thing to do. do it.

if your FAT is corrupted, you should know there is a second copy of your FAT
on your harddrive. you may copy the second FAT onto the first copy of the
FAT to repair errors. be careful. it's easy to do this wrong. there are
utilities on the web that can simplify this task.

lastly, weather CAN make a marginal harddisk fail. heat and humidity don't
affect the hard disk platter (it is sealed). heat can cause marginal
components to fail. condensation can cause current leakage/shorts. i have
saved the data on a couple hardrives by doing the following:
- get the drive as cold as you can (put in a freezer for a few hours)
- reboot
- quickly backup to a network or tape drive
you may not get a complete backup in one freezing. could take several
partial backups, depending on how fast the drive warms.

if freezing allows you to boot, you have a failing component on the
harddrive controller board. alternative approaches include using an aerosol
can of 'circuit freezer' to cool the components (difficult if you don't know
what to cool), or replacing the harddrive controller board (can be hard to
find a compatible pc board).

hope some of these suggestions help. i have frozen 3 drives and been able
to extend their life long enough to do a backup. 3 for 3.

BTW another 'thought' is that the problem (disk write error) was caused by
the climate here -hot and humid - producing condensation - don't know if
that's possible (I know hard drives have an airtight seal - do they have a
partial vacuum too?)

Sincerely... Steve
