Well, yes & no... W98se is not quite the same thing, but can seem to do what
Wingate (or whatever) does.
W98SE does NAT. All it does is allow computers on your network access the
internet. The internet sees your network as one pc.
Wingate et. al. are proxies and _cache_, which means it goes and fetches
stuff for you. And keeps a copy in case you or anothe pc wants the same
thing. Which might save on your telephone bill and/or network traffic across
the slow modem link.
NAT is simple and easy, and popular. The price paid is more network traffic
and dail-ups. ISP/telephone companies love NAT, it generates more income.
:-)
Wingate is smarter. The price is a little configuring on all machines. Also
one can filter ports, users etc. Get logs. Whatever.
Depends what one wants to do. I also think NAT is the best, but if a concern
is reducing dail-ups as mentioned earlier, then Wingate is better. Also one
has better control of security with Wingate.
Security is a function of what one knows of an OS/whatever. W98SE hides
everything. Wingate exposes everything. One can choose... :-)
