There are several nice programs that I used, but a really versitile one is:
FastLynx 3.1
It's the successor of the famous DOS-based FastLynx 2.01.
This is the windows version.
Very easy interface, and works "Out of the Box"

Has serial, parallel, USB, and NetBios and TCP/IP connectivity possibility.
