About the speakers and it's impedance:

It doesn't make much sense to take an ohmmeter and measure the resistance of
the speakers.
The 8 or 4 Ohm values that we always talk about is Impedance, which means
that it's the resistance for AC signals. not for dC, and they differ.
Moreover, I suppose that there is an amplifier in those speakers (you talk
about batteries).
the imputcircuit of the amplifier gives a totally wrong indication of dC
resistance.

the fact that the speakersound is a bit distorted can be caused by the lower
voltage of the Nicad rechargable batteries.
Try different adjustments at libretto outputlevel and amplificationlevel of
the speaker amplifier.
put the libby on the low side, and make sure that you don't put the
speakeramplifier to high, otherwise you will get distortion. those
amplifiers are maybe 2 or 3 Watss at most.

cheers
