AT least with my L110, win98se works very nicely on a 64mb system with 20GB HD. Snappy, decently responsive (given the 233mhz speed), and no problems getting everything going. If you're doing a 166Mhz L100, it may feel a touch sluggish however. A bigger HD will help responsiveness (faster data streaming off the HD due to higher data density). I've noticed this jump in performance whenever I put a much bigger HD into older laptops. As for the install, you'll want the \win98 directory copied to your HD, along with any tools you use (eg. partition magic, ghost), and Toshiba Libretto drivers (eg. video, sound at minimum, but everything at www.csd.toshiba.com -> support -> drivers will do fine). Also, make sure if you want to upgrade the BIOS, you do this before you install windows. It's known that some ACPI/APM hibernation/detection problems can occur if you upgrade the BIOS after windows has been installed already. -- I've setup my partitions with a second hidden DOS partition that only has the basics - the \win98 directory, tools and drivers. That way, even w/o a cd-rom drive in the future, I can always setup another windows partition and set it up and/or wipe the yucky one installed already and put in a fresh copy. Oh, also have a full symantec.com ghost backup image file of the base install of windows and drivers on the second extended partition - lets me restore quickly in case anything does go wrong. Naturally, you put all of the data files you make on a second extended partition so you can wipe the primary parittion without regard to what's on it. -- Beyond that, make sure you get at least all of teh critical updates at windowsupdate.microsoft.com for 98 - myself, I've got all of those + IE 5.5 SP2 + DirectX 8.1 + all the othere patches like the large HD update. Happily, the L110 runs quickly and fine with it all - not as sluggish as I'd expect it would be. Oh, and finally, set the video to 16 bit rather than 24-bit -> faster screen updaes and you can't see the difference on the LCD panel. Hmm, oh, and after you've setup the Toshiba control panel thing, you can setit to hibernate when you push the power button instead of shutting down. Let's for far faster boots and you get to keep where you are w/o having to reoopen widows and apps. eg. if you keep IE open all the time even during hibernation, it saves time by not having to wait for IE to startup again when you go online. ===== adorable toshiba libretto The latest news and information for the Toshiba Libretto owner. http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
