Thanks for your detailed response.
A few questions in context below.

Thanks for that tip. I hate "sluggish"

Is there any problem in having the new \win98 directory on the same partition
I am asking it to install to? My 6 gig is a little small to carve up into smaller
pieces
although I suppose I could always use Partition Magic to eliminate the extra partition
after the install. I already know that a \win98 on the same partition works for
_re-installs_.

My BIOS is 6.40 which may be the original! I see that Toshiba offers 8.10, 8.0, 7.30
and 6.50.
Any comments on which one to go with or should I just "go for it" with 8.10?

Right now I have the following partitions:
primary 4 gig
extended 1.2 gig
These were created with fdisk with the drive in the Lib 100.
However, I seem to have lost my hibernation - it doesn't show up
any more on the Start menu.
Is there any way I can check to see if it's there and get it working again?

I try to put data in a c:\data\various_sub_for_each_purpose
so I can just back up that c:\data with it's subs.
However I have learned from experience that Windows and it's apps put so much data in
their own
subdirectories that it's necessary to back up many application directories also.
For example, my /internet subdirectory contains various programs, each in their own
directory.
Like Opera, PMMail, etc.
They all like to put data in a sub of their installation directory.
Only a few like PMMail allow me to put the data elsewhere, most have no such provision.
So I backup c:\data, c:\internet and a host of others.

It was already there - I think that tip was from your cd.

Do you mean "Power Save" from Control Panel?
I don't see anything for Toshiba control panel - how do I set that up?
