well, on my hp 820e, when it reads a continous file off the CD, it doesn't make
any noticable noise besides the disc spinning.  but if you read a bunch of
random files, then it does a bit of head hunting, which is for sure louder than
the silent Sony CRX100E USB external 5 1/4" drives.

However, nothing really that I would grossly object to or mind during normal
use....

In any case, I suppose mine was bought from a previous smoker, so the writes
had stopped about 1/3rd of the way through for no reason one day.  Simply
disassembled the entire thing (easy, thank Ricoh for smart design), applied
some Valvoline spray lubricant (sold at auto stores, supposidly better than
WD-40) on the drive rails, then put it together.  Ran Nero's CD Speed's Random
Seek tests on it a few times, and it went back to normal.
