Yeah its when the laser is hunting for the beginning of a group of files
that it gives off that EEEERCH kind of sound every time it starts to look
again. And as I said, my other CD-ROM did this too, but not quite as loud
as this one. I think its probably a pretty normal sound. Supposedly the
drive had been refurbished, but all I saw when it arrived that might have
indicated that was a cardboard protector on the spindle. Nowhere was there
any information on a sticker or other source indicating that it had ben
refurbished.

I ran a Nero speed test before I tried to use Nero to burn a disk, and the
test crapped out about 1/3 the way through on this L70. I was afraid that
this might portend bad things to come trying to write at 4x, or write at all
on the L70. So I set up a test burn without actually writing on a CD-RW
disk, and it all went fine. Ive written a few CDs now at 4x speed now with
no problems at all.

BTW: I didnt have any problems at all finding 1x-2x-4x, 650MB CD-RW blanks
at the stores around Tampa at all. Though that could be BECAUSE this is
Tampa, and not Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, Santa Ana or Irvine. This is
certainly not a huge technology belt..

Matt
