You can usually find 4x all over the place its when you get certified 10x or 12 or even 16x that becomes a headache.. -----Original Message----- From: Matthew Hanson [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Sunday, March 03, 2002 3:31 PM To: Libretto Subject: Re: [LIB] DOS C&S drivers for HP M820E Date: Sun, 03 Mar 2002 21:24:48 +0000 From: "Matthew Hanson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [LIB] DOS C&S drivers for HP M820E >Date: Sun, 3 Mar 2002 12:46:54 -0800 (PST) >From: David Chien <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > >well, on my hp 820e, when it reads a continous file off the CD, it >doesn't >make any noticable noise besides the disc spinning. but if you read a >bunch of random files, then it does a bit of head hunting, which is for >sure louder than the silent Sony CRX100E USB external 5 1/4" drives.< > >However, nothing really that I would grossly object to or mind during >normal use....< Yeah its when the laser is hunting for the beginning of a group of files that it gives off that EEEERCH kind of sound every time it starts to look again. And as I said, my other CD-ROM did this too, but not quite as loud as this one. I think its probably a pretty normal sound. Supposedly the drive had been refurbished, but all I saw when it arrived that might have indicated that was a cardboard protector on the spindle. Nowhere was there any information on a sticker or other source indicating that it had ben refurbished. >In any case, I suppose mine was bought from a previous smoker, so the >writeshad stopped about 1/3rd of the way through for no reason one day. >Simply disassembled the entire thing (easy, thank Ricoh for smart design), >applied some Valvoline spray lubricant (sold at auto stores, supposidly >better than WD-40) on the drive rails, then put it together. Ran Nero's CD >Speed's Random Seek tests on it a few times, and it went back to normal.< I ran a Nero speed test before I tried to use Nero to burn a disk, and the test crapped out about 1/3 the way through on this L70. I was afraid that this might portend bad things to come trying to write at 4x, or write at all on the L70. So I set up a test burn without actually writing on a CD-RW disk, and it all went fine. Ive written a few CDs now at 4x speed now with no problems at all. BTW: I didnt have any problems at all finding 1x-2x-4x, 650MB CD-RW blanks at the stores around Tampa at all. Though that could be BECAUSE this is Tampa, and not Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, Santa Ana or Irvine. This is certainly not a huge technology belt..
