Easiest way is to have your broadband go to one box which then shares it out via a network address translator (NAT) - as far as verizon is concerned all your computers look like a single computer. That way you can manage your firewalling from that one box. The disadvantage is if you want to run servers on the inside you'll need to manage port mappings.
Note that the box the broadband comes into doesn't have to be a normal PC ... plenty of companies sell products, often called "broadband routers" which contain the NAT, firewall, portmapping, etc. and sometimes also have inbuilt switches, wireless LAN access points, content filters or even print servers. Some of them also have the DSL modem built in so you don't need a separate modem (although if you've got cable DSL this won't be much of an advantage). The better known ones for home use come from NetGear (Bay Networks/Nortel), Linksys (Cisco) and D-Link but there are many others.
Personally, I have a Billion BiPAC-711CE ADSL modem (several years old now) with inbuilt router and NAT, plugged into an old Bay Networks 10/100 managed switch, it does everything I need. The newer Billion model comes with a 10/100 switch.

We've finally made the leap to broadband signing up for the Verizon $29.95/month deal with a year's commitment. But I see I have to order something for free from Verizon that will set up home networking to allow all systems to share the DSL connection.
I've set up basic networking with my desktop and a couple of my Librettos.
But it seems broadband is going to require each system to have it's own unique IP address.
Has anyone gone through that process? I'm wondering if I can just go ahead and figure out how to do it manually, and not wait for Verison to send anything more. Or does Verizon have to set up IP addresses for each of the systems here at home before I can get them all online together?
Thanks for any input.
Matt
