you can do a couple things. one--if verizon didn't send you a modem gateway instead of a plain modem, drop them and start checking out other dsl providers. most dsl providers automagically send gateways now. two set up your fastests computer as a nat gateway router. three buy a nat router gateway.

Heh.... as you probably discovered in reading my post after the one you quote there John:
"Here in SCal Verizon >just< started offering the Westel VersaLink 327W modem that is a cable router, hardware firewall, and wireless router as well as a DSL modem."
The DSL didn't work after 1st setting it up. So Verizon sent a repair person to check the line coming in from the pole. We had a great time swapping nightmare stories about computers and bad phone lines. He ended up doing a number of tweaks to our line like removing an old filter that was designed to address obsolete phone that was the biggest culprit blocking the DSL signal, installing CAT 5 cable outside, and re-routing our wires around a spiderweb of connections that feed this area, essentially making a dedicated DSL line from the pole to the jack on our wall. Result, our line tested at 2.9mbps at Pcpitstop.com when he finished his tweaks! :

On top of that, downloads from my old dialup service have jumped from an average of 4.4kbps to 5.3 kbps. So as I've been suspecting for several months, your connection to the net can be severely hampered by the route your connection takes between the wall and the closest phone pole. I'd highly recommend anyone seeing low transfer rates to have their phone company check their local lines.
Only problem now though is that we can't get DSL on any other phone jacks around the place here. But with the Westel, we can just broadcast wireless to other systems we may want to put around the place.
Anyone know much about wireless encryption? The chances are extremely remote, but doing any banking via wireless sounds like it could just be asking for trouble down the line at some point.
