It seems that this positioning meets Gould's _recommendation_: "When both
parts have rests simultaneously, ..., separate these with at least one
stave-line." There are alternatives, but it would appear this is the
preferred.
I don't understand what you say about accommodating the melody line:
collision avoidance still happens. What is "semi-polyphonic choral music"
and why the relevance of more than one stave?
