This snippet is now published: Typesetting IPA transcriptions for lyrics <https://wiki.lilypond.community/wiki/Typesetting_IPA_transcriptions_for_lyrics>. My thanks to all who provided input on this thread, especially Lukas, Kieren, and Carl! I included some acknowledgments within the code.
@Lukas, if you have any feedback on the following wording, please let me know: “3. Using a dedicated music function, \withIPA, and an IPA Lyrics context.” May this snippet promote and advance the use of LilyPond (and of the International Phonetic Alphabet) in all contexts where IPA is useful — which, I can say as a singer, is a lot of contexts! By the way, this page would be a prime candidate for “output before code” (as we are discussing here <https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/lilypond-user/2026-01/msg00329.html>). I will also publish Vaughan’s snippet as a standalone page on the Wiki and add links between the two pages.
