Hi all. This wednesday (6/11/2002) we've had an installation party, in Adut area, the Technion. The installation process included Mandrake 9.0 and RedHat 8.0.
The Day started quite calmly, as an installed-person arrived once per 15 or even 20 minutes. It continued like that till 15:00 approximately. At 15:00, though, more people started to arrive, mostly to hear the lectures and to check what's all the mess about, and Meir gave his lecture at 15:30. Unfortunately, Shlomi Fish who was supposed to do the lecture of 12:30pm, did not do it. During the day, until the afternoon, we've had some very weird burning problems, as almost every 2nd CD made a trouble (I guess that it was a mixture of a bad CDRW with a bad quality CD), and refused to work properly in people's computers (missing packages, errors of bad packages and so on). Afterwards, the burner started to cooperate with us more properly, and there were almost no problems with bad burning. At 18:00, the big mass arrived, as many people arrived to hear Guy's lecture at 18:30 (the last one of the installation party series). Not only they had arrived to hear his lecture, but they had also arrived with their computers to install Linux on their boxes(...). Slowly but carefully, people started to arrive more often, until we didn't have a place for them and we entered them into a queue. At 20:00, we ran out of CDs totally (I brought 60 CDs), even though many people brought their own CDs for the installation. At 22:00, we still had a few installations running, but we had to shorten them (I had to close the area then, and to bring everything back to one piece, more or less..). In general, the day turned out very well, and I believe that it was a sucesss, in comparison to the last two events of the Haifux club. We've had approximately 75 installations, while at the last 4 hours we worked more than we worked on the first 8 hours of the day (Note: I include "installations" also the people who arrived to make special tweaks in their computers and such). I estimate that approximately 100 people arrived at least to see what's going on (this also includes the installed-persons). My impression is that there's a lot to do, advertisement speaking, that we didn't do, and that we should do next time. This time, we were much more organized with the ads, and they also included a greater radius than the "known community", so this brought more people to the Linux party, after we almost thought that it's going to end just like last time (if I remember well, there was no wave of installed-persons on evenings times, last time there was a party and a party before that. As for the CDs - I believe that next time we might consider turning back to last year's way - buying the CDs ready. This will save us a lot of headache which I believe that we had today (at least me ;). One point of light (out of many) that we had today is that we almost fulfilled the amount of people that we could handle on a small area such as Adut area. We could handle 75 installed-persons with a little bit of queue here and there, but if there were 100, I am quite doubt it (people would have to wait for a lot time, hence might have given up and leave). So this is a good point of thinking to switch to a greater place, if we increase the radius of the ads next time. In general, I am quite optimistic. Last but not least - I would like to thank ACTCOM and BEYOND SECURITY - our generous sponsors, for the lovely day, T-shirts, pinguins, lunch and snacks that we had during the day, and we wish to see them again next time. I hope that you've enjoyed the event!
