this is a great package:

, though i don't know if it helps you if you have your data stored in a
proprietary file format.

actually, there just needs to be an open standard for streaming audio
& video. right now, the only popular options seem to be:
real: available for multiple platforms, but only the client is free
beer. neither client nor server is free speech.
windows media: neither client nor server available for non-doze
platforms.
quicktime: client not available for linux. (special server not
needed, afaik.)
real is going down fast, and the d.o.j. doesn't seem to have noticed
ms using media player the same way they used ie. i was talking a few
weeks ago with someone who owns a streaming media company, and he has
a competitor who was going to stream real and mp streams until ms came
in and said, "if you stream only mp streams [which can only be served
from nt, btw], well give you the server software *and pay your
bandwidth costs*". there's no way he can compete against that, but he
has to because he hosts a high-profile show which caters to a linux
market.
this needs to stop. this is an area for rfcs and implementations, not
this silliness.
