The only way out is to manually implement a sort of custom entity references
in Director. Still as director is not unicode, you'll need to check it out.
Best is to use a flash sprite for this.

Oh, and by the way. My scary client demands that the project is made for
Shockwave 7 (yes..7) so using Flash to convert the characters is
unfortunately out of the question...

Is there any way around this? Like a "home made" character converter in
Lingo?

Since I can't change the xml-file the unicode characters need to be
converted in the Shockwave movie.
