Hi Mark, I used a very similar concept once and this is what I found out... if you can explain somehow the way the interface works it is better to use only one cube... click and drag will rotate it and a double click will do whatever you want for each face...
If you want to have a small dummy cube that does the rotating of the large one I suppose you can have two different viewports for each size but then again I'm not really an expert on D-3D so that may be just rubbish...
