No, I don't think so. You *might* be able to write an Xtra if you're 
proficient in C++, but to be honest, it doesn't sound like that's your problem.

Are you using any "call" functions? I ran into this back when I first 
started using Director, and the symptoms you're describing sound a lot like 
what I was getting.

If you call a handler, be aware that Director will return to the next 
statement after the call when it's finished (the called handler, that is). 
Confusing enough?
